The Weekly Atticus

This Week at Atticus Review

Are seasons important for writers?

I write to you from western Montana, where I am visiting my grandparents for the Labor Day weekend. It is September, and my writing life is once again building momentum as the seasons change from the languid pace of summer to the clarity of autumn.

Are seasons important for writers? For a certain kind of writer? Autumn, for me, is a time to begin squirreling away ideas. I lean into my own love of the horror genre, which shapes what I read, which shapes what I write. I pay attention more when the air cools. As a cook, the harvest season provides me with an abundance of fresh food, and as a climate activist, I feel a sense of tepid relief when the first real cold spell hits. As an essayist, the fresh sensory details ground me in patterns and curiosity and patience, in cinnamon and embers and cold bark.

Atticus Review

is evolving between seasons. Our summer issue is out, and our staff are working hard on our winter issue. Between these two issues is a season of harvest, a season of abundance and work and surplus, even excess. Maybe it's just my family's roots in rural Montana and Idaho that make me see creativity as a seasonal product, but I know I'm not alone. Social media is abuzz with the usual memes about the sudden shift that seems to occur between August 31 and September 1, the shift from slow relaxation to steady attention. On top of everything, it's almost time for the twelve-foot-tall skeleton decorations to go up.

What are you working on? What gives you inspiration? What stories will you gather?

. I hope you find the time and spirit to write what your want to write.

Peace, Keene ShortManaging Editor
