Plus: New CNF and an Interview

Prose Submissions Close Tonight

Prose submissions will close tonight by midnight, and we won't open again until after Issue Five launches one month from today on August 15. Remember, we're on Pacific Time, so all of you on the East Coast, watch your watches. We've been working hard on our summer issue, and once it goes live, we'll take a well-deserved break until we start looking toward our winter issue early in fall. In the meantime, remember that we are always open for book reviews and interviews.

An Open Letter to the A.I. Industry

The Authors Guild has begun circulating an open letter addressed to leaders in the generative AI industry, explicitly demanding that companies "obtain consent, credit, and fairly compensate writers for the use of copyrighted materials in training AI." This is an ongoing battle for creative freedom, but also for artists to retain control over their own craft, the same reason the Screen Actors Guild joined the Writers Guild of America in an ongoing strike for a fair (e.g. not grossly dystopian) contract. Please join over 4,000 authors in signing the above letter, and consider reading up on WGA and SAG-AFTRA contract negotiations, or even donating to a strike fund like Groceries for Writers. Basically, imagine if Major League Baseball stopped using human players and instead used video game bots to compete for the World Series. If we don't put up a fight, that's what studios, streaming services, and journalism conglomerates could do to the writing world.

Remembering Paula Harris

Lastly, we learned this week of the passing of poet and Atticus contributor Paula Justine Harris. Like many in the literary community, we are heartbroken to have lost an author who brought such sharp insight and honesty to the page and the screen alike. It was a privilege to feature just a sample of that voice last year, and we know her loss will be deeply felt. If you can, please take the time to read this thoughtful reflection on her life, by Anna Sophia. In the meantime, please take of yourselves. The world needs you.Peace,Keene ShortEditor-in-ChiefAtticus Review
