A Passing of the Torch

A Passing of the Torch

Michelle Ross introduces our new fiction editor.

A Note from Michelle Ross

Dear readers,This newsletter is my farewell and my thank you. I joined the staff of Atticus Review as fiction editor in 2015, which feels like a lifetime ago. I’ve learned so much over these years. I’ve had the pleasure of discovering so many wonderful writers’ work and, in many cases, of working with them to make that work even stronger. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing many of the stories we’ve published over the years get selected for various anthologies and other honors—Best Small Fictions, Best Microfiction, the Wigleaf Top 50, Best of the Net. I’ve also had the pleasure of working with so many other great writers who also read and/or edited for the journal. I’m especially grateful to Dan Cafaro for the opportunity and to all of you who over the years have trusted us with your work or who have read the writing we’ve published. This newsletter is also my passing of the torch. Please welcome Z Kennedy-Lopez as the new fiction editor! Z has been with Atticus Review for four years now. They were part of the first group of fiction readers I brought on back in 2019 when I realized, duh, I should really get more help reading submissions. Z has proved to be both a discerning and generous reader, and I’m thrilled that Z agreed to step into the role of fiction editor. While we all miss Michelle for her dedication and commitment to the journal, we're also thrilled to introduce our incoming fiction editor! Z Kennedy-Lopez is a wordslinger, musician, and sometimes-educator who writes about animals, bodies, queerness, and apocalypses. Their work appears in Catapult, Foglifter, Autostraddle, and elsewhere, has received two Pushcart nominations, and once won a six-word story contest judged by Amy Hempel. Z is extremely grateful for the support of the Tin House Summer Writers Workshop, the Writing by Writers workshop series, and the Can Serrat and Mother’s Milk artist residencies. They are infrequently online @queerbooksloth on Instagram and Twitter, and at their site. They're excited to read your work.

by

Sara Slingerland Sheiner

"When Meadows dips his hand into the river to bring out a poem, the waters of the river remain as part of the telling."

NEW FROM THE ATTIC

THE VIEW FROM MAINE // APRIL 2023

by

Barbara Riddle

"Is there anything more American than a long black LL Bean men’s bathrobe, made to resemble a vintage football jersey, fashioned out of heavy sweatshirt-type material and lined in lumberjack red and black plaid flannel?"
